Pig iron can be classified, based on its Silica (Si) content, into the following products:

Basic Pig Iron (BPI), has lower Silica level.It is used by Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) steel producers to improve quality and enhance productivity.

Metal foundries also utilize foundry pig iron (FPI) to produce cast iron products.
